I've been using this service for years, but every time I have to set up
on new computer I am bewildered by the list of message groups in the
initial header with no explanation of which one does what. How, EXACTLY,
do I get a known newsgroup added to the service? I want to add
alt.fiftyplus-friends.

Would you like to warn me, if and how you succeeded in finding the
fiftyplus-friends-group?

I'm using opera 12.16 on linux, to read newsgroups. Using the menu option
Mail/Newsgroups, and typing fifty into the search field shows that the
group alt.fifty-plus.friends is available already.

So it's likely just a couple of typos in the group search.

Have you enabled "always authenticate" in your newsreader?
Have you refreshed the group list?
